13 Nightmares / Shitride

13 Nightmares--Lincoln, Ne / 1986-1993? / Released one LP on Pravda Records (Chicago). Gregg Cosgrove-vocals/guitar, Heidi Ore--bass/vocals, Jon Taylor--guitar, Ron Albertson--drums

From Trouser Press/Ira Robbins: "While reviving the ethos of a '60s new-left stereotype — white guilt, inchoate rage, the romance of poverty and misery — in its lyrics, this striking quartet from Lincoln, Nebraska slams three generations — the MC5, Cheap Trick and Soul Asylum — of Midwest rock into each other on the powerful Shitride. Great tunes, loose'n'lively hair-raising electric music and guitarist Greggory-David Cosgrove's ripping vocals load the album with bracing energy and an extraordinary balance of rawness and subtlety. Except for occasionally insufferable lyrics (the title track is a whiny complaint about the rock'n'roll life that goes so far as to gripe about bartenders who withhold free drinks; "E.C" expresses solidarity for Eldridge Cleaver with the line "It's a white man's world for everybody but you and me" — yeah, right), this is an extremely cool record."

PS - Jon, Heidi and Ron went on to form Mercy Rule.

  1. Kim Greenlee Weeks says:

I am looking for Gregg Cosgrove who played in Stone Lizard in Corydon Iowa in the early 1980's.. I was a friend from the band..Kim Greenlee Weeks, can you help me?

  2. Chris says:

Will the other album ever be released?

    • Dan says:

Hopefully, yes. We'd put it up today if we could but are waiting from final go ahead from artist.

      • Pekka says:

Any news on the other 13 Nightmares record?

By the way: I red that Gregg Cosgrove went to form bands such as Clarke County, The GC3 and The Great Dismal but cannot find any material or information on them anywhere. Did these band make any recordings or is there another reason for their online absence? Is Gregg still making music? What a great song writer and voice!

        • Dan says:

Recordings of Gregg's other bands do exist, but I'm not sure if they were ever officially released. We'd love to have the stuff up on the site but that's up to Gregg and/or his bandmates. Same with 13 Nightmares... if they ever send in the stuff we'll happily put it on the site.

  3. John Dower says:

Love this record. Saw them play in Carbondale, IL and Chicago. Great band.

Loved this album...am listening to it right now. "Field of Glass" is awesome!

  5. Dan says:

Here's the cassette they released prior to Shitride: https://thebandbrokeup.com/2013/09/28/13-nightmares-it-hurts-to-be-murdered/ - Stay tuned for their unreleased album! We're waiting on some details but have it in our sweaty palms! Sign up for email updates and we'll let you know when it's up on the site.

  6. Nick says:

This is also one of my all time fans. I've been told by people in the know that they put out a cassette a year or two before shitride came out. If anyone has a it, I would love a copy. Glad to trade a copy of something I might have or whatever, but I want to hear it, badly.

    • Dan says:

Hi, Nick! They did indeed release a cassette and we'd love to have it on the site. I'm working on them to digitize it and put it up! They also recorded another album after Shitride that has never seen the light of day, though I'll admit that I have a bootleg copy. I'll see if they'll submit that or the cassette. Thanks for posting!
